The First of Many…
“Honey, I really don’t see how this will be able to work. I can’t leave. My whole family, my whole life is here,” James said as he watched his wife pack a small suitcase.
“This is something I really want to do…I can see myself going through with this. You said you would support me in my decision,” Colleen replied. “I’ll only be gone for six weeks. This is probably the longest amount of time I’ll ever be gone,” she explained.
“I’m really going to miss you,” James said as he pulled Colleen close. “I promise I’ll write to you everyday.”
The couple kissed and headed to the airport. They arrived at the airport, successfully passed through security and headed toward the gate where Colleen would be departing from.
“Flight 149 departing for San Antonio boarding now,” the intercom announced.
James and Colleen embraced. They kissed and said goodbye as Colleen prepared to board the massive 747.
“I love you, James,” she said, then boarded the plane.
Colleen found her seat and buckled herself in. Then the plane started taxiing to the runway. Soon they reached takeoff speed and climbed into the air. She always loved the feeling of flying. She had been fascinated with flight ever since she was little. Her father and grandfather were in the Air Force, and her dad flew remote controlled planes ever since she could remember. Now she was on her own. She looked out the window and saw that they were still climbing into the clear blue sky.
“Your ring is so beautiful,” the woman next to her commented. She looked down at her left hand and saw her sparkling engagement ring and wedding band. They were brand new.
“Thanks,” she replied. The engagement ring was a princess cut diamond on white gold. Simple, yet the diamond sparkled like fire.
“How long have you been married?” the woman asked.
“About a month,” Colleen replied. Was that all it had been? One month. Somehow it seemed they had been married since high school. They started going out during Colleen’s freshman year, and they had been inseparable ever since. Everyone told Colleen and James that they would get married, have three kids, and live in a white house with a picket fence. Everyone told them that they were meant to be together. Colleen and James believed it. They were so in love. And to think Colleen thought James was a jerk when she first met him...
“Congratulations,” the woman said. “So this is probably the first time you have been apart, no?”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Colleen replied. The first of many…she thought.
Colleen and the stranger fell silent, lost in their own thoughts. Colleen closed her eyes, as blue as the sky outside the window, and let her mind wander. She thought about what awaited her in San Antonio. She knew she was tough, but would she make it through this? Was this what she was meant to do? A few hours passed. She opened her eyes as the plane began to descend. She must have fallen asleep. They were almost there. In a few minutes the plane would be landing at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
